Distribution in India
Mising is spoken predominantly in the northeastern state of Assam, concentrated along the Brahmaputra River valley in districts such as Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia. It is also spoken by smaller communities in adjacent hills and border regions of Arunachal Pradesh.
Major grammatical features
- Phonology: The language features a symmetric seven-vowel system with contrastive vowel length, including the central vowels /ɨ/ and /ə/. Its consonant inventory is relatively standard for the region, avoiding complex clusters. Mising is generally described as a non-tonal language, though lexical pitch contrasts are attested in some closely related Tani varieties.
- Morphology: Mising is highly agglutinative. Nouns take postposed case markers (such as ergative, accusative, dative, genitive, and locative) and utilize an extensive system of numeral classifiers based on shape and animacy. Verbs feature complex suffixation to indicate tense, aspect, mood, spatial direction, causatives, and evidentiality.
- Syntax: The basic word order is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV). It is predominantly head-final and postpositional, with modifiers typically preceding the head noun.
