Major Grammatical Features
- Phonology: Bishnupriya Manipuri's phonological system is characterized by a blend of Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman traits. It has largely lost the historical Indo-Aryan aspirated voiced consonants (often replacing them with de-aspiration or tonal/register differences) and distinguishes between dental and alveolar consonantal articulations. It is written using the Bengali-Assamese script.
- Morphology: The language is morphological rich, combining Indo-Aryan inflectional paradigms with agglutinative elements influenced by Tibeto-Burman languages. It features distinct case-marking suffixes (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive, instrumental, and locative) and a complex pronominal system that distinguishes honorific levels. Verbs agree with the subject in person, number, and honorific grade.
- Syntax: It follows a rigid Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) basic word order. Modifiers typically precede the head noun, and the language relies exclusively on postpositions rather than prepositions.
