Rajbanshi

Rajbanshi is classified within the Indo-Aryan language family, specifically belonging to the Eastern Zone (Eastern Indo-Aryan) group. It is closely related to Assamese, Bengali, and Maithili.

Speakers

According to the Official 2011 Census of India, speakers of Rajbanshi/Rajbangsi are often classified under wider language groupings like Bengali, making precise independent figures difficult to isolate in Indian census reports, though scholarly estimates of the broader Rajbanshi/Kamtapuri dialect continuum range into several millions. In neighboring Nepal, the 2021 Nepal Census records approximately 137,000 Rajbanshi speakers.

Distribution in India

In India, Rajbanshi is primarily spoken in the northern districts of West Bengal (including Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Uttar Dinajpur, and Dakshin Dinajpur). It is also spoken in contiguous parts of western Assam (such as Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts) and eastern Bihar (Kishanganj district).

Major grammatical features

  • Phonology: The phoneme inventory consists of around 28 consonants and 6 to 8 vowels depending on the dialect. It exhibits vowel harmony and features a distinction between aspirated and unaspirated stops, though intervocalic glottal fricatives or glottalization can occur.
  • Morphology: Rajbanshi nouns are marked for number and case using clitics or postpositions (e.g., nominative, accusative-dative, genitive, and locative). Grammatical gender is not robustly marked on nouns, though natural gender is distinguished lexically or via suffixes. Verbs are inflected for tense, aspect, mood, and person-agreement, reflecting honorificity distinctions in the second and third persons.
  • Syntax: The basic word order is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV). It is a postpositional language where modifiers typically precede the nouns they qualify.
