Distribution in India

Galo is spoken primarily in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, with major concentrations in the West Siang, Leparada, Lower Siang, and Upper Subansiri districts.

  • Phonology: Galo features a six-vowel system (/i, e, a, o, u, ɯ/) where vowel length is contrastive. It has a relatively simple consonant inventory and possesses a restricted lexical tone system.
  • Morphology: Highly agglutinative in nature. Grammatical relations are marked predominantly via suffixation. It maintains a complex and rich system of numeral classifiers and extensive verbal suffixation indicating aspect, mood, and evidentiality.
